Spring Essentials

Hey babes!

It's finally April!  My favorite month!!  I know, as an almost-27-year-old, I should give up my birthday obsession, but seriously... That's easier said than done LOL!  So, to celebrate this year, I've planned 8 giveaways throughout the whole month!!  If you're a subscriber, you got my April giveaway schedule in your inbox, on Wednesday.  The giveaways started on 4/4 and the first one ends tonight!  You can head over to my Instagram if you want to check out that giveaway :)

Now, this post marks the start of my second April Giveaway!  I've partnered with one of my favorite boutique owners to give one lucky winner a $30 gift certificate to her site!!  Continue reading to learn more about that...

If you've been following along with me since the Fall, you may remember our previous collaboration, but if not... I can't wait to share this shop with you!!!

This online-only boutique was based out of North Augusta (where I live now) until about a month before we moved here... I can't even tell you how sad I am that I didn't get to meet Morgan in person before she relocated to Texas, but at least we have email & Instagram LOL!  I love her style & everything she picks out for her shop!  Especially her workout wear!!!  I purchased this set about 2 months ago & have never worked out in something I loved more...

Even though Revie is no longer *technically* local to me anymore, I still believe shopping her store is supporting my "shop small, shop local" ideals!  She's a very stylish paralegal by day, boutique owner by night, boss babe!  Everything she hand-chooses for her shop is super cute & perfectly represents her!  I think you would love her stuff as much as I do!!

I was really wanting to fill my Spring and Summer wardrobe with a bunch of skirts and dresses this year...  I binged on shorts last year, but have to be a little more dressy-professional with my new career path this year ;)  So, now I can officially say that I'm off to a good start!  This floral skirt can be dressed down with a denim jacket and sandals for the beach, or dressed up with a nice top and heels for work!  Its high wasted, not too short, pleated, and has the cutest on-trend, floral pattern!  I'm wearing a medium here.  It fits like a 4/6, so I'd say it runs a little small. I'd recommend sizing up one!  Also, I'm 5'7" and it still hits a little below mid-thigh, so the length is perfect!  It would be the perfect everywhere skirt - work, church, vacation, date-night, wedding!  You name it, and this skirt can make you look fabulous there!!  Plus, the fact that it has a bunch of different colors represented in the floral pattern makes it easy to pair with anything you already have in your closet!

The purple tank I styled with it in the first picture is also from Revie!  The unique color is not like anything else I have in my closet!  It has thick straps and is long enough to cover your booty with leggings in the Fall - just throw a sweater on top of it, letting the tail hang out, and you're ready to go!!  I wore it with destroyed denim this week, with a little front tuck, and I loved it!  It's so soft and comfy that I feel like I'll find myself reaching for it time after time this Summer!!  I got the small, and I'd say it fits true to size!

And then, it gets even better!  We are also giving away a $30 gift certificate to Revie as well!!  The giveaway is Instagram based, so if you have an Instagram account, head HERE to enter!  The giveaway will run through 4/11 at 10 am EST, and the winner will be announced that day via Instagram!

Happy Saturday babes!!

This week I have something super fun in store for you!!  I have contacted several boutiques local to my new (in 2 weeks) home!  And I've had the privilege of working with one over the last 2 months to bring some of the boutique to you!!  Revie is an online-only boutique that was founded in North Augusta, South Carolina (where Blake and I just closed on our new house yesterday!!!!)  Morgan is the owner, and her style is fantastic!!  I would totally own anything she buys to put in her shop!!!  She has a real passion for yoga, and the cutest workout-wear to rock while doing it!!  Every piece of athletic wear she carries in her store is yoga tested and approved by her :)  Her can see all her amazing yoga videos on her Instagram HERE!  She relocated to Austin, Texas just 1 month before we relocated to North Augusta... I'm so sad to have missed working with her in person, but I'm so happy we did find each other either way!!!

Its one of my greatest passions to tell the world about small businesses!!  And this is one that SO deserves your attention!!  Morgan sent me this adorable top that's part of her new Fall collection! Its composed of a thin sweater material up top, and then has a faux white poplin shirt-tail sticking out of the bottom!  Its the perfect neutral Fall top to be dressed up, or down!  And it's long enough to cover your tush in your favorite leggings!  You can find it HERE for just $28!

I have it paired here with my favorite ripped denim and some booties for a more casual look!  My specific jeans have sold out, but Morgan happens to have a fabulous pair of ripped denim in her Fall collection for $62 HERE!  I made the necklace I've accessorized with, and it's sold out too, but if you'd like one, email me, and I'll see what I can do ;)

Schriver's Boutique

Hey Babes,

I hope you have all had a wonderful holiday week!!  There's not much better than celebrating our stars & stripes, eating good food, spending time with loved ones, and remembering to never take our freedom for granted!!!  Except maybe getting a new post from me (LOL, JK.... or am I?)!!!

Ok, ok, I may not be that funny... But I am fashionable!! And boy do I have somewhere fashionably amazing to tell you about!!  A wonderful Tennessee based boutique called:

Those of you that know me well know that #shopsmall #shoplocal is so very important to me!!  And even though this particular boutique may not be local to SC where I am, its still a small business that absolutely deserves your attention!!  Schriver's Boutique is based out of Maryville, TN, but carries everything online so it can be shopped from anywhere!  The owner, Kate, followed in her great grandfather's footsteps and opened a clothing store centered around quality and customer service!!  A small, family business that strives for those things above all else is my kind of business!!!  And Kate is just as kind as she could be!!

Her new Summer Collection just launched this past Friday, and among the truly unique, fabulous pieces are this super cute, very wearable top, these very versatile gold drop earrings, and that crazy-fun clutch!!

IMG_4788-1.jpg

Close-up you can see that this top has a very seersucker-ish pattern, which is so perfect for us Southern girls' wardrobes!!  But the top is, in fact, made of a very lightweight cotton fabric!!  Its also a little oversized and really flowy!!  Plus it has all of the best Summer trends for tops - bell sleeves, a peplum, and a faux lace-up on the back!!  All of this put together means that this top is truly the most perfect Summer top for all you fashionistas!!!!  You can grab it for yourself HERE for the amazing price of $35, and I would suggest sizing down :)

The gold earrings have an almost hammered, antique look to them!!  They are the perfect length without being too heavy!!  And if you're anything like me, you could never have too many gold, go-with-everything type earrings!!  Although I think these particular earrings have sold out, Schriver's Boutique is still a great place to go for any jewelry!!  Kate loves to support local artisans and therefore, carries a bunch of handmade TN jewelry that you literally can't get anywhere else :)

But seriously, for those of you that don't know me well, I make jewelry myself as well, so you can trust me when I tell you that Schriver's handmade pieces are so gorgeous:

AND. THIS. CLUTCH!!  Honestly, I think it speaks for itself... But you know I'm never short on words ;)  The fun colors make it so versatile because there are so many to choose from for styling!!  If you're like me and prefer match-matchy, then this fun print is perfect for you to be able to pair it with a variety of colors and styles!!  And if you're more bold than me, this clutch could be great for a pattern-mixing outfit!!  But, I just so happened to have the most perfect neon pink dress to compliment the cute tassel zipper, and wore them together for date night this week!!  The woven texture and yarn accents give this clutch a very handmade feel!  And for only $25, you just can't beat it!!  My exact one seems to have sold out, but there are 2 more this patterns just as fun HERE & HERE!!

Schriver's is one of those places that will never let you down if you ever need a fun, unique, statement piece to add to your current wardrobe!!  I'm in love with Kate's taste for great patterns and even greater textures!!  Nothing in her store could be labeled as "boring"!!  Absolutely everything has wonderful personality and character :)  I'll link a few more of my favorites from her new Summer Collection below!  And don't forget to use code: demure15 to get 15% off of your entire purchase!!!

Y'all have a great night!!

XOXO

- Rachel

These 3 items were given to me free of charge from Schriver's Boutique, but all thoughts and opinions are my own!!

My Baby is THREE

Y'all, Demure is THREE YEARS OLD TODAY!!!

That boutique of mine has been quite a work in progress!!  Owning a boutique is like laundry... Nothing's ever really quite done!!

Ever since starting this blog, and having another platform from which to tell people about Demure, I've actually gotten more questions about how to open a boutique than I have about how to start a blog LOL!!  I'm not sure why that is, because really, in its infancy, A Demure Life would be considered more successful than Demure was at the same amount of time...  But that's ok, I've learned a whole lot in the past 3 years {which is mostly why A Demure Life has found quicker success} and I'm totally willing to share the facts of "how to start a business" with you!!

IMG_3404-1.jpg

First things first - I will assume you have already thought out your plan, consulted someone older and wiser {and maybe even an expert in the field}, and have researched the particulars of your business so that the general how-to's here will makes since!  And just so you know, I didn't write a formal business plan until I had already been in business for 2 years, because my business was constantly evolving into what it was going to become, and I just didn't know for sure yet what EXACTLY I wanted it to be...  So, here's were to begin:

1.  Claim Your Name:  I did this by forming an LLC... A Limited Liability Corporation... Which protects you and your personal finances from being entangled in any potential lawsuit or bankruptcy!  This is done at your state's Secretary of State's office, and costs $110 {at least that's what it costs in SC}.  Before driving down to do it though, you should check their website and make sure that the name you want your company to have has not already been taken!!

2.  Once you officially have a company created, you will then need to apply for an EIN number!  This is basically your company's social security number, and its used for banking and tax purposes!  It also goes along with protecting yourself and personal finances!!  Plus, its done all online at irs.gov {P.S. I tried to do this too soon after having changed my name after Blake and I got married, and it was a TOTALY NIGHTMARE, but for you it should only take 24 hours MAX}.

3.  You will then use your new EIN number to go file for your business license!  This is done at your state's Department of Revenue and it costs $50 {at least that's what it costs in SC}  While you are already there, go ahead and sign up for a "paying your sales tax" class and get a couple copies of the "sales tax exemption" forms {because some wholesalers request to keep one on file, so you'll want to have multiple}.

4.  Next, go start your company checking account!  I went the traditional bank route first and got charged fees far too often for not being able to keep the minimum balance in my account and it ended up ending badly... So, please learn form my mistake and start your business checking account with a Credit Union!  I'm talking the difference between starting up your checking account with $200 and $25, respectively!!  There my be other banks out there that do things a little differently, but at my bank, business accounts are treated very differently than personal accounts, and $200 was just not something I could keep in my account at all times to avoid a fee (and still can't)!!  Please remember to start your bank account using your EIN number instead of your own personal Social Security Number - PROTECT YOURSELF!

5.  So now, this is where the majority of my questions start, but you have to go through all of those steps before this one is even possible, but most people don't even know 1-4 even exist!  The number 1 question I am asked: "Where do you get your merchandise?"  And the answer is: "I buy my merchandise from various wholesalers!"  But the reason all those other steps are necessary first is because you can not buy from a wholesaler without the Retail (business) License!  That would be illegal because wholesalers don't charge tax {the reason for the tax exemption form} so you have to be buying it with the purpose of reselling it {and charging sales tax at the point of sale} in order for it all to be legal!!

6.  Then, the follow-up question usually is: "Well, which wholesalers do you purchase from?"  And my answer to that is very simple:  I have 2 favorites, though I have purchased from many others!  I buy mostly from The Lookbook Wholesale based out of L.A. and Miss B, a small wholesaler based out of Atlanta, GA in America's Mart, to which I will be going in person in August and I am SO EXCITED!!  You can google search wholesalers and hundreds will pop up!  You will then just have to choose your favorites!!  Make sure to check where their warehouse vs. their headquarters is because I get charged a $4.99 fee every time I order from one particular wholesaler... They have a warehouse in New Jersey, so you get your merchandise pretty quickly!  However, they are based out of France, so the charge is an international one, and most banks/credit unions charge a fee for international purchases!

7.  Next, you need a platform on which to sell these products you have now purchased!  A website of any kind will do if you market it correctly!  Etsy works for some (though I didn't like selling through them much), and I know of one VERY SUCCESSFUL boutique that sells via Instagram exclusively!!  As long as you have a way of getting your merchandise in front of the eyes of your target market, you can succeed!!  I personally use Squarespace for both ADL and Demure!  I love how user friendly it is, how great the customer service/tech support is, and honestly, they are just really pretty sites {very stream-lined, which is something I value}!!

8. Advertise and Market yourself like CRAZY!!!  Social Media is truly, very important to this!  And I would like to say that all you blogger babes reading this already have an advantage that I didn't have!!  3 years ago Instagram was JUST taking off as such a valuable resource for marketing!!  But I was so slow to the game... I didn't even start an Instagram for Demure until I was 8 months in!!  And then, after that it took me SOOO long to catch on to how it worked, how to make it work for me, and honestly, I would sometimes go a whole month without posting!!  I only had 400 followers on Demure's Instagram page until November 2016... I've tripled that number since then - in just 6 months I've tripled the number of followers that I had gotten in the previous 2 years combined!!  It makes me so sad really, when I think back on it...  I don't even know how much farther I would have gotten had I truly understood the importance of the social media influence when I first started... But I was also probably too young to have started a business then, so God has me right where He wants me right now!!!

Ok ladies, this post is already too long as it is!  I will stop here for now, but PLEASE leave your questions below!!  There is really an infinite amount of stuff I could tell you, but it would be so much easier for me to continue this in a series if I have exact questions to answer, so I could condense my thought into what is relevant to y'all, specifically!!

I hope you've enjoyed reading what I've had to say so far!  And I look forward to reading and answering your questions!!!

XOXO - Rachel
